Abstract | This study examined the course shopping behaviors among a sample of approximately 5,000 community college students enrolled across nine campuses of a large urban district. The sample was purposely designed as an analytic, rather than a random, sample that sought to obtain adequate numbers of students in course areas that were of theoretical and of policy significance. The courses included in the sample were exacted to ensure a high representation of enrollments in which previous research has shown much course attrition and from which there have been high rates of attrition from college. Course shopping occurred in a significant minority of the enrollments examined in this study of a large student sample over the period of a year and a half at nine urban community colleges. While occasional drop-and-add activity characterized about one quarter of the students, a full 15% of the students practiced bulk or frequent cyclic shopping. This course dropping activity is in addition to the substantial attrition that regularly happens in the middle of the semester. In summary, it is obviously beneficial for students to enroll in courses that will provide benefits for them and that will not create a situation in which dropping and adding is seen as a necessary move. Proactive measures to lessen the need for shopping appear to be warranted for the success of students and for the effective application of college resources. (Contains 8 tables and 2 notes.)
