Abstract | Now in its fourth decade, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally acclaimed academic support model. Communication and critical thinking skills developed through collaborative learning are the hallmarks of the program. SI has enjoyed thirty-some years of robust success in the world of the academy. It has proven itself to be an accomplished academic retention model, founded on a solid theoretical foundation, and supported by three decades of empirical validation. With the enthusiasm and dedication of today's leadership coupled with the wisdom and forethought of the founders, the possibilities and applications for SI are boundless. There are so many directions in which SI can go. This article highlights some of these directions: (1) SI in the business sector; (2) worldwide collaborations-expansion; (3) integrating SI into the educational systems of developing countries; and (4) integrating SI into developing countries.
