AbstractAccording to the Ohio Association of Community Colleges, community colleges educate the majority of the nation's first responders, since more than 60 percent of all new nurses and nearly 85 percent of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians are educated by community colleges. One of those Ohio schools, Owens Community College (OCC) in Toledo, Ohio, is certainly doing its share of that training. In the OCC School of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, students can earn an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice technology, emergency management and planning, emergency medical management, fire science technology or public safety communications. There are also programs in development that include criminal forensics, white collar crime and information security. In this article, the author discusses the new opened Center for Emergency Preparedness of the Owens Community College, that would bring their training in public safety into a new level. The provost and executive vice president of OCC, Paul Unger, says that this center is the result of a vision that has existed at the school since 1994. (ERIC).
