Abstract	Adult education and social justice are evolving notions. How adult education finds modes of articulation with social justice issues is a permanent challenge to which popular educators try to respond. Modes of articulation are necessarily different depending on the local and historical contexts. The author calls these modes of articulation zones of engagement. They are called zones because they reflect the coexistence, in a common place, of diverse views and perspectives in which the creative tensions of critical thinking are reflected. These movements create the learning opportunities in which the type of knowledge that is needed to accumulate power in order to negotiate change becomes possible. This article explores three diverse views and perspectives in which the creative tensions of critical thinking are reflected: (1) The tension between the priority of external vs. internal limits to the expansion of globalisation; (2) The tension between naming the old and the new: the search for language; and (3) The tension between policy and politics.
