Abstract | For eight years, relationships with community partners have been the mainstay of a science enrichment program for secondary students. Through the use of problem-based learning, science classes use, the techniques and tools of scientists to solve authentic problems directly related to students' interests and needs. In this article, the author describes how their collaborations with community partners made their problem-based learning experience more authentic and exciting for students while ensuring that the experience is consistent with the community's needs and interests. Here, they chose Motor Mania as their topic for their problem-based learning experience. Students built model cars in preparation for a Grand Prix Challenge while learning physical science content and skills along with driver/passenger safety. (Contains 6 figures.) (ERIC). |
