| Abstract | Internationalization is nothing new in higher education, but its meaning has expanded over the years. Three generations ago, it referred simply to sending students overseas for a few months to expose them to other cultures. In the 1960s, international education took on a public-service and research dimension. Today it refers to a complex set of efforts that cover what happens in classrooms on the home campus, research partnerships formed by faculty members, public diplomacy on the part of institutional leadership, and the pursuit of profit through fund raising and recruiting students overseas. Whatever form the global campus takes, many, if not most, American colleges these days believe that they must educate students about, and be involved in, cultures and economies beyond the country's borders. This article discusses how American colleges meet the challenges of internationalization. (ERIC). |
