Abstract | In this article, the author discusses the released report entitled, "Doctorate Recipients From United States Universities: Summary Report 2005," which is based on the annual Survey of Earned Doctorates. According to the report, the number of earned doctorates awarded by American universities rose 2.9 percent in 2005. Doctorates in science and engineering rose even more, climbing 6.5 percent in a single year and passing the previous high mark set in 1998. The author argues that these increases do not tell the entire story. Instead, the number of U.S. citizens getting doctorates has decreased, and the substantial increases in degrees awarded to international students account for the growth. Here, he presents some highlights which the survey found. (Contains related materials table.) (ERIC). |
