AbstractA musical ear is widely accepted as an essential ingredient in the education of successful music students. Most music educators believe that without a well-developed ear, it's impossible for a musician to function on a professional level as a teacher, conductor, performer, or composer. The purpose of this article is to introduce the concept of audiation and teaching methods based upon it to classroom sight-singing instructors and applied teachers, especially string teachers. It is intended for college-level teachers, but public high school and private applied teachers may also find it useful. The authors present methods for teaching and the use of audiation in both aural skills classes and applied lessons. They also integrate music reading with listening and singing from the very beginning of study. In applied lessons they integrate the physical motions necessary for performance with listening and singing, reserving the study of notation for later. The result of their class room method is that students acquire notational audiation skills (i.e., the ability to "hear" a melody given only the tonic pitch and the notation), and the result of their applied method is that students acquire excellent performance skills to which the use of notation can be added. (Contains 11 notes.) (ERIC).
