Abstract | This article charts the progress of a project to introduce an apprenticeship scheme providing school and company-based training for the first time in Syria. It traces the successes and failures of the project. Syria is new territory for this kind of initiative. The article outlines some of the difficulties of working in a highly centralised environment where government, schools and industry have little experience of working together. It describes how special attention was paid to building bridges between the different participants at all levels and how this paid off. It also shows how this modest pilot project is preparing the ground for a much more ambitious overhaul of the Syrian vocational training system. (Contains 2 tables.) (Author). |
