AbstractIn June and July 2004, the Institute for Comprehensive Social Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Russian Federation office of the F. Ebert Foundation, carried out a repeat survey on the topic of "Citizens of the New Russia: How Do They Feel about Themselves, and What Society Would They Like to Live In?" Use was made of the set of methodological instruments of the primary survey conducted in 1998, supplemented by applications that were developed more recently by the Institute. The model of the sample consisted of two stages. In the first stage, an expert selection was made of typical objects in twelve regions of Russia; in the second stage a selection was made of raion cities, worker settlements, and villages (seventy-one communities in all), in addition to megalopolises and administrative centers. Results indicated that the portion of the population whose standard of living got better during the years of the reforms (approximately 17 percent), regardless of their age, would like to go back to the Soviet era only in one out of every five cases, whereas almost two-thirds would prefer to live in today's Russia. The respondents whose standard of living have remained the same (28 percent) have a feeling of nostalgia for life in the Soviet Union only in one out of every three cases, while almost 50 percent of them are perfectly satisfied with their lives today. Only those whose standard of living was shattered as a result of the changes of the past fifteen years (23.5 percent of the population), or those who find themselves stuck in chronic poverty since the time back before the reforms, have a yearning for the Soviet past; only 30 percent of the former and 18 percent of the latter want to live in today's Russia. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.) (ERIC).
