Abstract | In this study, the author examines the factors that permit young people's inclusion in market relations in the "spheres of education, employment (in the labor market), and consumption." The data for this study are drawn from a city wide representative survey in Moscow of the Association for Socioeconomics and the Institute of Problems of Employment, Russian Academy of Sciences and monitoring surveys of the professional pans of graduates of secondary general education schools and the monitoring surveys of the professional plans of graduates of secondary general education schools and young specialists who have graduated from institutions of higher learning, technicums, and colleges (conducted by the Center for the Standard of Living, Social Welfare, and Labor Market of the Academy of Labor and Social Relations and the Committee of Labor and Employment under the Government of the City of Moscow in 2000; and data of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2000 to 2002 from the research project "Factors of the Social and Professional Stratification of Young People in the Transformative Processes of Russian Society," directed by G.M. Mkrtchian). The results of the study shows that there is a direct link between family origin and educational stratification as one of the most important conditions necessary for the reproduction of the social structure, specifically by way of cultural capital. Findings of the study give grounds for concluding that the young people of Moscow exhibit a shift in their consciousness and behavioral priorities toward a high level of aspiration to acquire an education and qualifications. Knowledge, qualifications, and a profession or specialty are above all of a utilitarian value, a means of attaining a certain status as a result of not only their competitive position in the labor market but also, later on, their "higher aspiration in terms for level of consumption."
