Abstract | Since 1979, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) has worked to achieve its vision of a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to realize their life's aspirations. Specifically, the organization provides national leadership in education, research and advocacy. In cooperation with 170 affiliate groups, NDSS has influenced important local and federal legislation, established October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and founded the Buddy Walk--the nation's largest advocacy walk for Down syndrome. In this article, the author describes the events that took place during the 2005 NDSS conference held in Chicago. As a mother of a child with Down syndrome, the author relates how the conference helped her believe in the potential of her son and that of others living an independent, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
