AbstractThe Penn-Delco School District in Pennsylvania uses a walk-through process focused on looking at student work and talking with individual students. The purpose is to ascertain what those students are able to express about their own learning. At the beginning of each year, a committee of teachers at each of the district's schools meets to identify one area to target for improvement. Then a team of administrators, teachers, and invited guests conducts a one-day walk-through, interviewing every student. Interviewers try to find out whether students understand the goals and can verbalize them. The results guide professional development and school improvement for the year. The district has used this process for seven years and has found it to be a key in not only raising student achievement, but also creating a culture of collegiality and reflective discussion among educators.
