AbstractTo successfully generate student excitement in science, teachers need to be flexible regarding their curriculums. Students also need to be open to novel, hands-on experiences. This article describes a student teacher (ST) who taught a science unit on "Our Environment." She had already prepared her lesson and unit thoroughly but she changed the lesson plan when a student brought in a starfish to show the class. As everyone carefully observed the starfish and asked questions, the ST recorded each of the questions on the blackboard. With assistance from the ST, the students performed research to find answers to these questions. By doing the research projects described in this paper, as well as participating in hands-on activities, teachers can duplicate in their classroom the methods that the ST used with these fourth grade students.
