Abstract | The author of this article, a Montana teacher who is on sabbatical, while she is writing a book, relates what having time to read education news has done to her views of the No Child Left Behind Policy. She refers to NCLB as a masterpiece of language manipulation, and says that President Bush has a massive education program that doubles as a political slogan, saying that it is pretty, but far from accurate. She specifically comments on Secretary of Education, Rod Paige's calling the National Education Association a terorist organization, and other controversial statements he has made regarding NCLB. She mentions a USA Today article where Paige called teachers opposed to NCLB "a coalition of the whining." She argues that grassroots educators have always known NCLB is unworkable, and that requirements are being more relaxed because NCLB simply does not work. Her prediction is that NCLB will continue to be more relaxed until after the presidential election, then quietly fade into sleep. She concludes this opinion piece by saying that she could live with the NCLB's flaws and unrealistic expectations, but finds it more difficult to abide those who so willingly trade personal and political gain for children's futures.
