Abstract | In this article, the author discusses the persistence of President Bush on the tradition of America's two previous presidents by naming the White House Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, which aims to reduce the Hispanic high school dropout rate--now to the point where one in three Latinos fails to complete high school, and only 11% earn undergraduate degrees annually. In June 2003, the Commission issued its final report, From Risk to Opportunity: Fulfilling the Educational Needs of Hispanic Americans in the 21st Century. The major recommendations of the report, as well as the mixed reactions from experts in Hispanic education to the report, are presented. (ERIC). |
