Abstract | Adventure programs have recently emerged that are specifically designed for individuals living with cancer, yet few research studies document the outcomes of such programs. The purpose of the current qualitative study was to examine the effects of an adventure program on individual adult cancer survivors. Three central themes emerged from the data: (a) renewed sense of self (b) feeling of support, and (c) sense of control. The data suggest that adventure programming may be useful in increasing a personal sense of self-confidence, providing an avenue for support and communication, and developing coping strategies. Implications for future research and program design with this population are discussed. (Author). |
