Abstract | Determining the extent to which the critical science perspective has been implemented in family and consumer sciences (FCS) secondary programs was explored. An informal survey of state supervisors of FCS programs revealed that the critical science perspective of curriculum development is being implemented in slightly less than half (44%) of the secondary classrooms in the states responding to the survey. More than two decades ago, the curriculum approach in FCS underwent major changes and educators began adopting a new curriculum approach, the critical science perspective. The critical science approach to curriculum development encourages teachers to strategically plan the content to help students arrive at plausible solutions to issues and problems involving the family. Based on the principles of critical science, thinking is promoted among students. Redick et al. (1998) projected that states would adopt the critical science perspective as the preferred curriculum approach. From this research, it appears that state supervisors are initiating the critical science approach. (ERIC). |
