Abstract | This article argues that excellent schools emerge from the extensive, ongoing, and inclusive conversations among those who participate in the everyday life and work of the school. These conversations focus on the construction of complementary teaching and learning practices. As they persist and mature, they pattern the life and work of a school in ways that have the potential to transform it into an excellent school. Schools that have such conversational patterns already established are very likely to be perceived as excellent by their stakeholders. This approach is very different from the prevailing view, in which the key factors associated with excellence are identified, specified, initiated externally and managed internally, as if a school were a device rather than an emergent phenomenon. The approach suggested in this article is grounded in the everyday experience of those associated with the school. Properly led and managed, it enables stakeholders to participate in the transformation of a school into a place of excellence. (ERIC). |
