AbstractThis article asserts that in preparing the youth for tomorrow, one of the educators' preoccupations should be helping them learn to make effective, responsible, intelligent choices. Though educators see the importance of choice in relation to student behavior and classroom management, there is little evidence they have considered choice in relation to educational programs. In fact, it would seem that some of the key changes to public education over the past twenty years have significantly reduced the choices adolescents can make. Adolescents make choices all the time, but are seldom given choices about what, when, where, and how they learn, at least not choices that are conducive to their development and growth. They will, of course, make these choices once free of compulsory public schooling--they will decide whether to continue their formal education at time of school-leaving, what learning environment to seek, what trade or skill or course of study to follow, whom they will learn with and from, and what resources they will need.
