Abstract | The author of this commentary was looking forward to visiting Japan, a new culture. With excitement she anticipated experiencing hot springs, monumental shrines, breathtaking gardens, delicious sashimi and soba, and the speedy bullet trains--all so different from life in Boston. She was not disappointed but was surprised, pleasantly, by constant reminders of her job in student services thanks to the extraordinary customer service she experienced each day in often unexpected ways. This article describes her characteristic encounters, some lessons she learned about customer services, and some practical applications the author recommends. (ERIC). |
