AbstractThe freedom to pursue intellectual inquiries wherever they might lead and the freedom to give expression to one's views, whatever they might be, are crucial for the intellectual health of educational institutions. But while those who teach zealously defend their own academic freedom, they sometimes overlook the fact that academic freedom is just as important for the students in their classes, as it is for themselves who teach. Academic freedom for students is essential if they are to explore new venues of academic inquiry, develop their critical thinking skills, and participate in the dialog that is so essential for the democratic processes to function effectively. While much of the discussion of academic freedom has been focused on the post-secondary level, what has often been overlooked in the literature and elsewhere is that academic freedom in middle school and secondary school classrooms is just as important--perhaps even more important. In this article, the authors discuss the academic freedom in the middle and secondary school classrooms. (Contains 3 notes.) (ERIC).
