AbstractThrough basic literacy experiences like discussing, reading, writing, viewing, and listening, students become aware of themselves as readers, increase reading abilities, and demonstrate an overall understanding of "just right" books in an environment very different from the usual activity-filled elementary classroom. Amazingly, because of basic support and conferring and, more important, because of its simplicity, BOOKMATCH has assisted the independent reading progress made by each of this author's 6,7, and 8 years old students. BOOKMATCH is an acronym. Each letter stands for a specific criterion for students to think about when choosing books for independent reading. In addition, these criteria include support questions that assist independent readers. BOOKMATCH can be a scaffold for independent book selection as well as an assessment tool that guides instruction. This article discusses the following topics: getting started with independent reading; learning more through student surveys; modeling BOOKMATCH; BOOKMATCH as an instructional tool; Moving ahead with BOOKMATCH in Comprehension; and BOOKMATCH scaffolding book selection for independent reading.
