Abstract	Off an inner-city highway, on a neglected industrial strip in Washington, D.C., is a woodshop operated by Covenant House Washington. In this least likely of places, six young women and men are working alongside an instructor to fabricate and assemble a set of child-sized tables and chairs. The furniture is kid contemporary, with curved backs and rounded arms and big holes for little hands to grab. Made of thick hardwood plywood, each piece has been computer designed to fit together in precisely cut slots, resulting in clean, strong joints. Contemporary woodworking machine technology is enabling young people to make significant steps toward individual success and meaningful employment. During the course of six months, each student--in this shop, they're called Artisans--is exposed to the skills necessary to make it as a helper in a cabinet shop or fabricating high-end countertops. They work in a highly structured, personalized environment that provides the realistic expectations and support that lead to retaining a job in a demanding production environment. The Artisans Program operates on three parallel tracks. The first involves hands-on training in the workshop with instruction from experienced teachers and visits from volunteer master craftspersons. On a second path, youth have the opportunity to travel to local marketplaces to sell their products developed during training. By interacting directly with customers, these young adults develop a sense of business and the mindset of entrepreneurs. Finally, they enter the third track--a production experience. (ERIC).
