AbstractFor accrediting organizations, informing the public about higher education quality has emerged as perhaps the most vexatious, complex, and controversial issue in the current reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. The proposal is vexing because society is expanding the zone open to the public at the price of private space. It is complex because it involves a number of actors who themselves represent multifaceted and highly nuanced enterprises--not only the range of accrediting organizations but higher education institutions of all types. It is controversial because, as the contributions to this article reflect, the actors see this issue as involving choices about core academic values fundamental to both accreditation and higher education.
