AbstractPolicy makers really sounded off this spring about public education. State legislators derided No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for taking away state prerogatives in setting education policy and the National Governors Association essentially tell federal officials to stay away from repeating NCLB at the high school level. President Bush tried to move forward his high school reform agenda but was rebuffed by Congress. All of the considerable ado going on in policy making these days seems so terribly top-down and out of touch with how students see the world. Until policy makers address the glaring gap between what truly engages students in learning and what most high schools currently offer, all the rhetoric will be so much sound and fury. (ERIC).
