AbstractOver the past 15 to 20 years, colleges and universities across the United States have excelled at creating powerful and compelling mission statements that reflect their commitment to foster diversity--and appreciation of diversity--on their campuses. The statements provide a vehicle through which we can communicate to a wide range of constituents our values, aspirations, and commitments about the need to serve a diverse student body. Faculty and administrators today design and implement curricula, campus activities, programs, and services focused on meeting the needs of a diverse student body and educating for participation in an increasingly diverse world. We do all that we do with the belief that fostering diversity and an appreciation for it is appropriate and important to the success of our institutions. But do students value this goal as much as teachers and administrators do? This article discusses the results of a study administered to students at Oregon University to assess their feelings about, and perspectives on, diversity. (ERIC).
