| Abstract | The quality of students' lives can be greatly enhanced through music, and teachers know that musicians at all levels risk injury when they practice and perform. Overuse injuries are painful, disrupt progress, and can even permanently halt performing careers. Expert treatment can be difficult to find on short notice, especially when an injured player tells you just two days before the program he or she cannot do a concert. Most would agree that finding ways to avoid such problems in the first place is the best solution. Without prevention training, young, enthusiastic students, practicing alone, can easily overtax their systems and push tired muscles. Finding easily accessible practice advice, however, can be tricky. There are currently more than 1,400 journal articles and books in English on musicians' performance problems, but they are mainly research-oriented. This article translates some of that research into a few simple principles that teachers can begin sharing with students to help them minimize or avoid injuries. It presents some ideas on how to practice so students can stay fresh, avoid strain, and work longer and smarter. (ERIC). |
