AbstractIn an era of dwindling resources, compelling student needs, burgeoning violence, and escalating performance expectations for students and faculty alike, classroom teachers are confronted with new demands that challenge their traditional roles as educators. The leap from a productive individual contributor, working essentially behind a closed classroom door, to a new identity of "teacher as leader" constitutes one of the most engaging transitions in teachers' professional lives. Learning how to accumulate informal power, exercise influence, and reconcile conflicting collegial interests requires nothing less than a profound identity shift for contemporary classroom teachers. This article discusses the importance for teachers to be seen as a "leaders" in the eyes of their students and gives tips and strategies on how teachers can achieve this. Sections include: (1) Why Lead?; (2) Teachers as Leaders; (3) Leadership: Powerful Processes; (4) Management of Attention; (5) Management of Meaning; (6) Management of Trust; and (7) Management of Self.
