| Abstract | A Michigan study of children's agencies found that very few had any former youth in care either in leadership or board roles. The author, himself a product of the child welfare system, suggests that quality services will require perspectives of these former consumers of care. Exciting new practices have emerged in the field of youth development and have been widely documented and practiced. Positive youth development, positive psychology (Larson, 2000; Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000), asset building, and the strength-based approach are slowly replacing the historical practices of deficit reduction, labeling, and "fault fixing." This swing of the pendulum away from looking for deficits, diseases, disorders, and dysfunctions not only feels good and seems intuitively proper, but also is supported by recent research on resilience (Werner & Smith, 1992; Werner & Smith, 1977; Garmezy, 1981; Rutter, Giller, & Hagell, 1998; Wolin & Wolin, 1993), asset building (Benson, 1997), positive youth development (Pittman & Irby, 1996), and seminal ideas, such as the Circle of Courage (Brendtro, Brokenleg, & Van Bockern, 2002) and family privilege (Seita & Brendtro, 2002). A logical extension of the strengths movement is to involve former consumers of children's services in leadership and governance of these organizations. (ERIC). |
