AbstractOnce or twice each term, the author accepts an invitation to talk with journalism students about current issues in education and how journalists cover education debates. Ottawa's Carleton School of Journalism graduates a substantial proportion of the young people who will soon try to report knowledgeably on a bewildering array of subjects. As today's equivalent of "cub reporters," many fresh graduates who find jobs in the media will be assigned to entry-level stories less exciting than reporting on mad cows or angry politicians. Some of them will end up on the education beat, covering school board meetings, standardized test results, school closings, and, if they hit the jackpot, the occasional teacher strike. My goal is to convince these students that many of the education headlines du jour arise from tensions between different sets of interests and belief systems and that these tensions are part of the story. The side that prevails in these conflicts usually succeeds not because of its superior analysis but because it has capitalized successfully on reading and creating public opinion about schools. This article contains a description of the authors experiences and what she has learned. (Contains 3 notes.) (ERIC).
