| Abstract | When a dynamic librarian like Sara Weissman, who launched one of the nation's first electronic reference services in Morris County, NJ, wonders what she's been doing with her time, you know you're in pretty heady company. Weissman was one of the 27 winners of the 2003 New York Times Librarian Awards. Expanded nationally this year from their origins in New York City and its environs, the awards recognize "outstanding public service."Nearly all the recipients were on hand this past December in the New York Times auditorium to receive their $2500 check and plaque. Many of them had spent a chunk of their award money to fly to New York City for the ceremony, and they came from as far away as Lopez Island, WA. They were accompanied by family and friends and often by the person who nominated them. As the winners made their way across the stage, blowup photos of them with their patrons or nominators and quotes from the nominating forms flashed on a huge screen. As the NY Times's Alyse Myers said in presenting the awards, "None of tonight's honorees knew they would win an award for their work." That didn't stop them from providing the best public library service they could. There just aren't enough awards to go around to recognize the kind of work librarians do every day. (ERIC). |
