Abstract | The press media has taken an active role in the debates over bilingual education through editorial analysis and policy recommendations. The editorials' policy recommendations are influential because they are directed at the political elite as well as to the general public, both of which have a limited understanding of bilingual education. Twenty-nine editorials written in response to a New York Times (Steinberg, 2000) article that reported post-Proposition 227 test scores from California were analyzed. The editorials' analysis and policy recommendations, the majority favoring English-immersion programs, reveal popular assumptions and attitudes regarding the educational needs of immigrant students.
