AbstractProspective teachers attending a mathematics methods course were encouraged to attend to and investigate their teacher-talk through a letter writing exchange with elementary students. This paper reports on their tendency to respond to correct answers and to supply the answers to incorrect answers, examining how they began to interrogate and assess the problems of such practices and consider alternative forms of teacher responses to students' right and wrong answers.
