Abstract | Uses data from a study of organizational socialization and induction in universities to critique social practice theory and further develop a model illustrating these dynamics in university life. Offers a case study of one unusual sub-departmental workgroup in an English university that comprised both deaf and hearing academics; such a case study displays important features in an exaggerated form.
