Abstract | Argues that the anticipation or reality of pregnancy and motherhood shape urban girls' participation in their senior year of high school. Interviews and analysis of students' classroom talk and writing show frequent references to motherhood as girls plan ambitiously for their futures and worry about their children. The media's discourses of adolescent pregnancy are contrasted to poor minority women's narratives. (SM) |
