Abstract | Traditional diagnostic intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are usually intended to be used as standalones whereas nondiagnostic tutors are designed for collaborative learning among students and between teachers and students. This article describes diagnostic and nondiagnostic ITSs, proposes a framework for comparing features of diagnostic and nondiagnostic tutors, and presents data on the effectiveness of each type.
