Abstract | Examines how parents think about assessment in a reformed middle school mathematics program, how a group of parents knew about their children's growing competence, and how these ideas generated norms that positioned parents and their children in the elitist hierarchy that characterizes school mathematics. The authors argue that assessment is a tool for maintaining social orders and relations. (GR) |
