Abstract | Presents an ethnographic examination of directive sequences in two speech communities, one in the United States and one in Colombia, with emphasis on the distinctive belief systems revealed by directive use. Shows that patterns of results are consistent with the values of Americans and inconsistent with the values of Colombians. Discusses how those patterns reveal cultural underpinnings. (SR) |
