Abstract | Rejects views of missionary education as either an arm of colonial conquest or an agent of social amelioration. Suggests that relationships among missionaries, colonists, and indigenous peoples were complex and pragmatic, although the primary missionary objective of religious conversion necessarily involved assimilation of European values and customs.
