Abstract | In response to our society's demographic changes (a shrinking middle class, a declining birthrate, and an aging population), some compelling arguments for supporting public education are emerging: (1) the education/economy equation; (2) the worker/job mismatch; (3) the declining productivity argument; (4) the upper class/underclass rift; (5) the generation gap specter; and (6) the "pay now or pay later" thesis.
