Abstract | Dr. Knox's writings illustrate eighteenth century England's ambivalence to women's education. He displayed a theoretical appreciation for feminine intellectual abilities and postulated feminine intellectual equality. However, he also believed that women should not be educated outside the home, receive a classical education, or publicly display their intellectual attainments. (AM) |
