Abstract | The article presents a brief biography of Francis Wayland, a Baptist minister and president of Brown University from 1827 to 1855, who was instrumental in convincing mid-19th century America to support industrial education. Although not a technologist, Wayland advocated industrialism and public vocational-technical education to improve the quality of life. (MF) |
