Abstract | In this "Distance Learning" Special Issue, Errol Craig Sull introduces the "Try This" series of articles to assist In The Classroom. Sull notes, where once the idea of offering ESL (English as a second language) assistance and courses was a minor afterthought in postsecondary education, it has become crucial, for it recognizes the need to help transition nonnative English speakers into a learning environment--and an eventual professional mainstream--where English is the primary language. Doing this effectively within the online school and within its online course offerings requires skill, a quality ESL program, well-trained educators, and an ongoing melding of the ESL information and coursework throughout the students' courses. This is a delicate balancing act, but several approaches can make the process a smooth and effective one. Sull's "Try This" offers three approaches to effectively integrating an ESL program into the online classroom--understanding the need for an ESL program, creating the ESL program, and integrating the ESL program along with lessons learned.
