Abstract | In recent decades, the income gap between low- and high-income families has widened in the United States. Although students from low-income households need to have opportunities for narrowing this gap by enrolling in and graduating from college, the higher education system reproduces the status quo in various ways. This outcome results partly from neoliberalism, an ideology that has influenced higher education for the past four decades. Neoliberalism is often mentioned in journals and newspapers. But information about how neoliberalism affects universities is frequently unmentioned. To close this gap in the literature, this article focuses on how the business model that many universities implement harms students and society. This article also offers examples of practices that would likely produce better results. (As Provided). |
