Abstract | Mathematics language routines (MLRs) are a form of ambitious multilingual mathematics instruction that can be used to engage students in rigorous mathematical thinking while supporting English language and literacy development. MLR Co-Craft Questions allows students to get inside of the context of a problem before solving it, without feeling the pressure of producing answers. It also fosters a space for students to produce the language of mathematical questions and provides students with opportunities to analyze how different mathematical forms and symbols can represent different situations. This article illustrates the use of Co-Craft Questions by drawing on a preservice teacher's asynchronous rehearsal and three in-service Math I teachers' synchronous enactment of this MLR, and provides three descriptions for implementing this routine: in-person/hybrid, remote/synchronous, and remote/asynchronous. The authors believe this MLR's attention to language and the focal teachers' rehearsal and implementations will be useful for teachers across the grade bands and across different instructional contexts (e.g., remote instruction or in-person instruction).
