Abstract | In this paper, I offer a conceptual framework for examining how racism and white supremacy might be manifested through a textual discourse of whiteness in student affairs responses to racist harms. I define a textual discourse of whiteness as how various peoples' interactions and work with texts within an institutional setting create a social reality that avoids and minimizes the historical and contemporary nuances of racism (Cabrera et al., 2017; Leonardo, 2009; Smith, 1993). To examine the textual discourse of whiteness in student affairs practice, I analyze literature about responding to racist harms in these settings. Based on my analysis of the literature, I offer a framework for examining whiteness within institutional practices for responding to racist harms. I conclude by proposing an institutional ethnographic approach for helping researchers and practitioners shed new light on how whiteness operates within student affairs efforts for racial equity.
