| Abstract | A knowledge of ionisation energies helps us understand the elements and their chemistry. The usual plots of first ionisation energies give us little insight. Apparent irregularity of first and second ionisation energies of transition metals and lanthanides can be explained in terms of the electronic configurations of the ground states. Periodicity is clearly illustrated by a plot of the third ionisation energies which show the familiar zigzag pattern. Ionisation energies are useful in determining the electronegativities of the elements and in Born-Haber cycle calculations. (As Provided). |
