Abstract | From October to December 2016, a college sample (n = 536) of men (41%) and women (59%) 18 to 41 years old (M = 20.2 SD = 3.02) completed self-report surveys that assessed mental and behavioral health using a novel, mobile app called SHAPE. Multiple methods (e.g., flyers, face-to-face, e-mail, listservs) were used to recruit students. Almost half (48%) of the sample reported feeling down or depressed. Sleep and alcohol use were associated with decreased mood (r = 0.44, p < 0.0001 and r = 0.14, p = 0.05, respectively). Moderate physical activity had the largest magnitude of effect on mood, stress, and sleep (ranging from r = 0.11 to r = 0.15, p < 0.01). Results suggest that mobile app surveys can capture sensitive, time-relevant mental, and behavioral health data. These findings indicate that mobile apps can be used for surveillance of emerging and existing mental health needs that can be used to inform intervention and prevention efforts. (As Provided). |
