AbstractHistory departments at many colleges and universities offer upper-level courses that focus upon the craft of the discipline. These stand-alone methods classes often lack the specific time period and geographic region that typically anchor history curriculum. Although most graduate programs in history provide in-depth exposure to historical theory, translating this knowledge into useful pedagogy for classes at the undergraduate level can be a daunting challenge. This essay's purpose is to provide one way to organize an upper-level undergraduate methods class in history. The framework is based upon the author's experience teaching a class titled "Craft of the Historian" at Saint Cloud State University for the past fourteen years. The goals of this class center upon exposing history majors and minors to only the most essential aspects of historical methods and historiography rather than diving deep into the intricacies of historical theories or advanced methodologies.
